COOS BAY, Ore. -- A waste treatment plant in the City of Coos Bay has experienced a plant upset.

The wastewater treatment plant on Ivy Avenue is not operating like it should and isn't meeting permit requirements, according to the city.

They are warning residents who go near the bay to properly wash their hands if they come in contact with the water. They said if people are cooking oysters or shellfish should make sure to cook them thoroughly.

The plant is taking immediate action to correct the situation, but it is not known how long it will take to get the plant back in balance.

They said because it could potentially endanger your health and the environment it has been reported to the Department of Environmental Quality and Coos Health and Wellness.
