EUGENE, Ore.-- FOOD for Lane County made its first delivery in a new Subaru Outback on Wednesday.

The car was a gift from Subaru, part of their Subaru Loves to Help program. They donated 50 cars to Meals on Wheels programs across the country. FOOD For Lane County was the only chapter selected in Oregon.

Subaru chose FOOD For Lane County based on the number of people a new car would help serve. It is expected to increase deliveries by 30 people per month, bringing the total monthly count to almost 500.

A Subaru representative told us the Outback is known for its durability and is a top safety pick.

FOOD for Lane County had trouble last winter when roads collected ice and snow. Manager Roslyn Fox told us this is perfect timing for the new vehicle.

“Staff are always using our own vehicles in the winter. If someone doesn’t have all-wheel drive, sometimes the south hills are pretty sketchy in the two-wheel drive vehicles. We’ll be able to send the Outback up in those hills and know that everybody is going to be safe”, Fox says.

In addition to delivering healthy meals, the organization does welfare checks and visits. They anticipate the Subaru will make future trips easier and safer.
