EUGENE, Ore. -- The number of pedestrian accidents increase on Halloween night, according to police.

While Halloween is a fun night for children, it can also be a very dangerous one. Springfield police said it's very important to be on alert, especially when crossing streets and big intersections.

Doctors said on Halloween night they see three to four times the number of children deaths than any other time of the year. They said the ratio of kids to cars walking in the dark increases the risk of accidents.

Springfield Police Officer Tom Speldrich said street safety is number one.

"Rather than crossing back and forth you know in every house, just work one side of the street," he said. "When you get to the end of the block or whenever you want to cross, cross and then work the other side of the street."

He also recommends putting reflectors on the costumes if the streets you will be walking are very busy.

He said this will make it easier for drivers to see you and your kids.
