EUGENE, Ore. -- A Eugene doctor is reminding women just how important it is to do self breast-exams every month.

Dr. Brooke Kyle with Women's Care said it may have saved her sister's life. She said a lot of people are hesitant to do exams because they're not sure what they're looking for.

She tells her patients to start the week after their monthly cycle. You should raise your arm over your head in the shower and make small circles all the way around.

"What you're feeling for will feel like a knot or a pea or something that's a little bit different in consistency than the other tissue," Kyle said. "Sometimes it feels a little more grainy. Sometimes it feels like a clump of tissue."

She said it's good to check yourself after you've been checked out by your doctor, so you know what feels normal and what doesn't.

Kyle's sister, Piper, is undergoing breast cancer treatment. She was diagnosed when she was 37.

She said when Piper felt a lump, she had it checked out right away, even though they don't have a family history.

"She caught it when it's stage 1c, which is potentially curable," Kyle said. "She's 37. If she had waited until she was 40, she would have missed the time, when you get your mammograms. She would have been stage four and might not have had that long to live, but she picked it up when it was curable... because she did her self breast exams."

Piper had a mastectomy and is just finishing chemotherapy. She still has to have radiation.
