SHASTA LAKE, Calif. - Deputies in Shasta County, California are investigating the death of a University of Oregon student.

Deputies said at 8:45 A.M. on Saturday, they were called to a man who was not breathing at Gooseneck Campground in Shasta Lake.

They said when they arrived, they found a 21-year-old man not breathing. They said CPR was performed, but he was ultimately declared dead at the scene.

That man was later identified by U.O. as Dylan Pietrs.

Students tell KEZI this weekend is the annual Shasta Weekend, which is an unofficial event organized by fraternities.

The university released a statement Saturday evening offering their condolences to Pietrs' friends and family. It said in part, "As devastating as this sudden passing is, it is important to point out that this tragedy is connected to an unauthorized tradition among many college students. Students from many institutions have a history of demonstrating poor life choices during visits to Lake Shasta. These activities are contrary to the values of the university and fraternity and sorority organizations."

Investigators told KEZI that Pietrs was found by fellow students who said he was drinking the day before and went back to his tent early Friday evening.

Deputies said they did not find anything that led them to believe this was foul play, and they do not believe this was a suicide. They are still looking into whether alcohol contributed to his death.
