PORTLAND, Ore. -- A 7-year-old girl and her family are back home after spending two days at OHSU’s Doernbecher Children's Hospital in Portland after she was hit in the head with rock Monday evening.

“I just knew it was out of my realm of being a mother and I knew I just couldn't put a band aid on it walk away,” said Amara Demeter’s mom Amy Smith.

Smith said Amara was swinging at Armitage Park Monday evening when a Hispanic-looking man threw a rock that hit Amara in the forehead.

Smith said she took her daughter to Riverbend Hospital where a CT scan revealed a fractured skull. Amara was then airlifted to Doernbecher where she had a steel plate put in her head. Although the family said they have insurance, they’re worried the whole ordeal could cost them thousands of dollars.

“We'll get through it and figure it out,” Amara's dad, Jason Demeter, said. “There is no amount of money I wouldn't pay to help my daughter, but we're going to try to get some assistance and figure this out because it's going to be a pretty penny.”

While Smith said they believe the man who threw the rock did it on accident, she said he didn’t bother to help or even apologize. She and her husband are asking the man to come forward and take responsibility.

Smith said he was at the park with a black-and-white pit bull, three other Hispanic-looking men and two young girls around the same age as Amara. They have filled a police report, and the Lane County Sheriff’s Office said the case is under investigation.

“I would like you to just come forward and do the right thing,” Smith said. “Set an example for your children. This isn't OK to just walk away and not do anything.”

Amara’s family has set up a GoFundMe account to help offset the medical costs. To donate, click here.
