A fire in Winston is under investigation after church is badly burned

A church in Winston caught on fire Saturday afternoon causing a significant amount of damage to the building.

WINSTON, Ore. --- A church in Winston caught on fire Saturday afternoon causing a significant amount of damage to the building. 

Just before 2:30 p.m. firefighters with the Winston Dillard Fire District and Douglas County Fire District responded to a report of a fire at The Church of the Nazarene at 385 SE Thompson Ave in Winston.

Several people called 911 and said the church was on fire and they could see both flames and smoke.

When crews arrived they found the right side of the church fully engulfed in flames. Officials said the fire was spreading to the middle portion of the building. The Winston Fire crew immediately requested a 2nd alarm for additional resources.

Crews were able to get the fire under control at 4:03 p.m. The church sustained heavy fire, smoke, and water damage throughout the building, according to officials. 

Winston Dillard Fire District, Douglas County Fire District No. 2, Roseburg Fire Department, and Lookingglass Fire District responded to the incident with 26 firefighters including five fire engines, two truck companies, and three command vehicles.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation by the Oregon State Fire Marshal’s Office, Oregon State Police, and Winston Police.
