COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. -- The Oregon Health Authority lifted the recreation use health advisories issued for Dorena Reservoir and Upper Klamath Lake and issued an advisory for Lake Billy Chinook Friday.

Water monitoring at the reservoir near Cottage Grove and the lake near Klamath Falls has confirmed that the levels of cyanotoxins, which are harmful algae toxins, are below recreational guidelines for human exposure, according to a news release from OHA.

At Lake Billy Chinook, near Madras, cyanotoxins have been found in Perry South Cove on the Metolious Arm of the lake. The concentrations found can be harmful to humans and animals, officials said.

The advisory extends from the cove to the southern tip of Three Rivers Island located downstream.

Officials said that visitors to all Oregon waters should be alert to signs of algae blooms as they develop and disappear throughout the season. Officials do not monitor all waters and waterways for cyanotoxins.

People, and especially small children and pets, should avoid areas where the water is foamy, scummy, thick like paint, or pea-green, blue-green or brownish red in color.
