EUGENE, Ore. -- Allergy season is hitting Eugene hard this spring, but there are things you can do to lessen its effects, Melanie Wayne with Oregon Allergy Associates says.

The pollen count is more than double what would be considered low during this time of year, Wayne said.

"Now would be a really good time to get on regular medications. There are some really good over-the-counter medicines, some antihistamines or some nasal sprays, that are out there. Generics are fine as well as the name brand. They're very equivalent," she said.

She also said that first, you can try over-the-counter medications, but if they don't work, you should go see your allergist or primary care physician, and they can set you up with a prescription. The prescription drugs are usually stronger.

"We do recommend keeping your windows closed and when our weather gets real nice and we might need some cooling -- use the air conditioning. Showering off at the end of the day. Get all the pollen off the body, out of the hair, so it doesn't go to bed with you," she said.

Wayne said nasal spray can clear pollen out of your nose after being outside.
