GLIDE, Ore. – Containment on the Archie Creek Fire burning east of Roseburg reached 10% on Saturday evening, up from 0% earlier in the day. The fire is still slightly under 116,000 acres.

On Saturday, crews worked on structure protection and creating containment lines around the perimeter of the Nonpareil area. The majority of the work was done around the western portion of the fire between the Little River area and Nonpareil area.

Fire crews were aided by continued low winds and an inversion layer that has helped limit fire activity.

In total, 495 personnel are assigned to the fire, which officials said is below what is necessary for a fire of this scale. With limited resources, officials have also turned to industrial landowners and logging companies to provide support.

Officials anticipate 125 members of the Oregon National Guard to arrive in the coming days, though the duties they will perform are unclear.

There will also be a private meeting for landowners to learn about the status of their properties. The private drop-in event begins at 3 p.m. on Sept. 13 at Glide High School. The meeting is open to residents of the following locations:

  • Moore Hill Lane
  • Susan Creek Road
  • Star Mountain Lane
  • Smith Springs Lane
  • Evergreen Springs Lane
  • Honey Creek Road
  • Tioga Lane
  • Rock Creek Road (all side roads)
  • North Umpqua Hwy from Rock Creek Road to Steamboat Klahanie Lane
  • Skyview Drive
  • Lone Rock Road
  • South Lone Rock Road
  • Bar L Ranch Rd (all side roads)
  • Terrace Drive
  • Upper Terrace Lane
  • Mystic Mountain Ln
  • Evergreen Lane

Workers with logging companies have described widespread loss of homes just miles from Glide.

“I just feel bad for the people that live up here that lost everything they have. Their whole livelihoods,” said Scott Opheim, who was assigned to clear roads behind the fire line on Saturday.

Road and area closures in and around the Archie Creek Fire remain in place while firefighters continue suppression efforts.
