EUGENE, Ore. – The architects in charge of the redevelopment of the riverfront property near EWEB presented their plans to the Eugene City Council Wednesday afternoon.
The city bought nearly 17 acres from EWEB in April 2017.
Williams and Dame Development and staff with the city of Eugene believe this riverfront development project right next to the Willamette River will create more access to the river and will help revitalize downtown.
The company’s proposal includes building a riverfront plaza with a variety of retail stores and a hotel, as well as several market rate and affordable apartments, condos and town homes.
Staff said 10 to 15 percent of the space will be used for retail and the rest will be used for housing. They hope to house 800 to 900 people in the redeveloped area.
Eugene Mayor Lucy Vinis told KEZI she's thrilled with the amount of people the new space will bring to downtown.
"It has been a goal all along that you have a more viable downtown if people live downtown, you want people to be able to live downtown,” Vinis said. “So this helps us push that opportunity out there that more people will be able to live downtown and that helps the vitality of our downtown core."
She said Dame and Williams Development’s concepts will go well with the city's plans of implementing a three-acre park along the redeveloped downtown riverfront.
Mayor Vinis said they still have not determined any estimations on how much the project might cost, but said they hope to finish the project by 2021 for the World Track and Field Championships.
