EUGENE, Ore. -- Officers arrested an armed man Sunday morning after he was found passed out in his vehicle, police say.

Police responded at about 5:15 a.m. to reports of a man sleeping in a running vehicle stopped in the far right lane on Franklin Boulevard at East 11th Avenue.

The man, who police identified as Romaldo Vela Jr., 22, reportedly had a large sheath on his hip, a large blade on the passenger seat and a semi-automatic rifle behind the passenger seat.

Officers pinned in the vehicle to keep Vela from driving away and attempted to wake him. Police said when Vela woke up, he reached around the passenger compartment of his vehicle, and officers ordered him to put his hands on the steering wheel.

Vela allegedly put the car into drive, crashed into the parked patrol vehicle in front of him, and then put the car in reverse.

Police said Vela continued to refuse to comply with instructions, and additional units were called in to help. Officers reportedly got Vela out of the car through the driver’s side window and used pepper spray when he continued to reach inside the car.

Once in custody, police said they found a concealed firearm on Vela’s belt and extra magazines in a pouch in addition to a large knife. They added Vela did not have a license to carry a concealed weapon. Multiple other weapons were found inside the vehicle.

Vela was taken to the Lane County Jail for driving under the influence of alcohol and unlawful possession of a firearm.
