Army Corps of Engineers releasing Dorena dam at 'historic' levels

Officials are calling the release "historic," saying water is rising faster than the 1996 flood.

COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. -- The Army Corps of Engineers started increasing the release of water to prevent an overflow situation in Cottage Grove.

Tami Schroeder, a park manager with the Corps, said they are concerned for the safety of people who live downstream, especially near the Row River Road area.

"As you can see, we have a full reservoir over here, so we're doing the best that we can to release water levels so we can reduce damages downstream, and we're really concerned about the safety of people who live downstream," Schroeder said.

Officials are calling the release "historic," saying water is rising faster than the 1996 flood.

The idea is to get water out fast enough so that water doesn't flow over the dam, because then it is out of control of the Corps.

They are also working to release water from Cottage Grove Lake, which flows into the Willamette River.

Unlike the Dorena dam, the Cottage Grove dam has safety release valves.
