EUGENE, Ore. -- The Eugene Saturday Market kicked off Saturday, and with it came downtown crime.

Lt. Doug Mozan with Eugene police said that both the downtown and the street crime units were in full force and were able to keep a hold on the day, maintaining peace and order.

He sent out a release saying two men were arrested: one on a drug charge, and one on an existing warrant. A citation for smoking marijuana in public was also given out.

Police did receive pushback from some community members when they learned they would have to buy a permit to gather on Wayne Morse plaza, but Mozan said most were assuaged due to the permit only being $25 for the whole year.

"We are really taking seriously this notion that the downtown is like our living room, and we want to do everything we can to make people who want to come to Eugene, to live in Eugene, to work in Eugene, to shop in Eugene to feel more comfortable and safe and confident that they have come to the right place," said Mozan.

Mozan also said that the Eugene Police Department is currently prioritizing hiring to help strengthen the department as Eugene's population grows. They have 40 people currently in training.
