EUGENE, Ore. -- Assisted living facilities are taking precautions to keep the novel coronavirus from getting their residents sick.

Staff at Avamere Rehabilitation of Eugene posted a sign on their front door asking all non-essential visitors and the public not to enter the building to avoid spreading the virus.

The facility offers both long-term and short-term care. David Tobin said his wife Tary is recovering there after a fall. He said staff told him to leave the facility when he was visiting her Monday night.

"There is a lot of nice people that work there, and I feel for their safety too," Tobin said. "I miss my wife of course, but she'll be home hopefully this weekend."

KEZI reached out to Avamere to learn more about their efforts but haven't heard back.

Officials at Cascade Living Group, which owns Emerald Valley Assisted Living, Waterford Grand, and Spring Valley Assisted Living in Springfield, said they are following guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. They are not only limiting access to their communities but are also doing more antiviral fogging and bolstering their stock of food and protective gear.

Bill Watson, who is looking for a place for his mom, said he's happy to hear that many places are taking precautions.

"I think it's an excellent idea that they are doing it and are preparing ahead just in case," Watson said.

Tobin said he can still talk to his wife over the phone and hopes the restrictions don't last long.

"There shouldn't be panic, but I'm glad they're trying to take care of it," Tobin said.

Cascade Living Group sent out a newsletter describing how they are responding to concerns following recent cases of coronavirus in Oregon. Read the full letter below:
