SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – After a wanted man’s failed attempt to steal a car, the victim and officers chased the suspect down Gateway Street on Thursday, Springfield police say.

Just after 2 p.m., a caller reported that a man was inside her co-worker’s pickup truck trying to steal it. The man is believed to have stolen the vehicle in the past and reportedly had the victim's keys, according to police.

As officers headed to the Shoppes at Gateway near Spirit Halloween, they learned the pickup’s owner reportedly got inside his vehicle and was chasing after the man who was running away. Police identified the suspect as Sebastian Bivens, 31.

Arriving to the Sizzler parking lot, officers reportedly saw Bivens running away from the vehicle that was following him. That’s when they reportedly saw the man run back toward the pickup, apparently trying to get inside.

Police said an officer told Bivens to stop, but he started to run away again. Police said they saw Bivens throw a pistol as he headed through the parking lot. A Taser was used to keep him from getting away and he was taken into custody.

A search allegedly turned up methamphetamine and knives, as well as keys on a keychain that police say they confirmed belong to the victim. Police also found the gun that had been thrown, and it was reportedly confirmed to be stolen.

Bivens faces charges of unauthorized use of a vehicle, first-degree theft, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and meth possession and a warrant out of Eugene.
