BEND, Ore. -- A disagreement among roommates in Bend ended with one man seriously injured and the other in jail.

Deschutes County Sheriff's deputies were called out to a house the Old Bend-Redmond Highway after reports of an assault on Sunday.

Deputies said a 63-year-old man had been attacked with a hammer while he was asleep and was continually struck throughout the day.

Deputies said the attack stemmed from an argument about a roommate moving out.

They said after the initial attack, Matthew Planteen, dragged the victim around the house while continuing to strike him with a hammer. The victim was eventually able to grab his phone and call his friends for help, more than 12 hours after the initial attack.

His friends armed themselves with a baseball bat and were able to hold Planteen, 34, at bay until police arrived.

The victim was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Planteen was arrested on charges of attempted murder, assault, kidnapping, unlawful use of a weapon, attempted escape, tampering with evidence, and resisting arrest. His bail is set at $480,000.
