EUGENE, Ore. -- Eugene City Club met at the University of Oregon Baker Center Friday to talk about the many issues transgender people face every day.

Bethany Grace Howe spoke about her personal journey as she transitioned and reminded the community why it’s difficult to be trans in this time.

She said because there are many actions currently taking place in the government limiting the rights of those who've transitioned, they feel their community is under attack. Howe said if people focus on supporting them rather than questioning, it’ll make the process much easier.

"If somebody tells you they’re transgender, non-binary, whatever it is, even if you don’t understand it, believe them. And I think once you start with belief and empathy, the understanding part can come later,” Howe said.

She focuses on helping people in the community understand a very misunderstood part of the population. Howe also does stand-up comedy around Eugene.
