EUGENE, Ore. – A pedestrian is dead after being hit by a car in Eugene Friday afternoon.
Police said it happened at West 7th Avenue and Taylor Street before 2:30 p.m.
The first officer on scene found witnesses with a man who wasn't breathing. Police attempted CPR until medics arrived, and the medics administered aid, but the man died.
Investigators say the man fell into traffic for unknown reasons and was hit by a camper trailer headed east on West 7th Avenue.
The pedestrian’s identity has not been released. Officials did confirm he is a white man in his 60s.
Michael Amador works at a coffee stand called Liberty Espresso right across from where the crash happened. He said the moment the man was hit, multiple people rushed to help him, including one of his customers. He said they pulled the man out of the street and back onto the sidewalk.
"I looked out the window one second and everything was normal. Then I went to give a customer their order and there was all this commotion. I saw a gentleman lying in the road. People came to help but it was just one of those things that couldn't be done about it," Amador said.
Amador said the driver who hit the man looked panicked but he believes it was a freak accident.
Drivers were asked to avoid the area as police and emergency units responded to the crash.
Police said the driver is cooperating with the investigation. Foul play is not suspected at this time.
