Blitzing the Preseason: Monroe Dragons

Monroe won a 2A state title in 2017. But with Triangle Lake moving to a 6A man program and reconfiguration changing the face of the league, the Dragons have a challenge ahead of them this season.

Monroe, Ore. -- "You know it's the same story," Monroe head football coach Bill Crowson says simply. "It's come out and go to work and these guys wanna be here and they wanna go to work and they wanna be successful. So it really doesn't take a whole lot of magic in terms of those things. Just come out and go to work and see where it goes."

It really is that simple. A process of head-down hard work from the reigning 2A state champion Monroe Dragons.

"We're just trying to get back to work," Monroe linebacker Zach Young explains. "Get back in the swing of things. Get ready for this upcoming season. I think we got a lot of potential to be succesful this year. We got some good pieces coming back so we're excited."

"It's a new season so I wouldn't say we're focused from last season to this new season," lineman Christian Garcia follows up. "There's new guys, people graduated. So we're just doing what we've been doing for the last couple years so it's nothing new."

Of course. It's that old refrain. But league reconfiguration and 6-man's pilot program have definitely made things different for Monroe this year.

"We played a lot of teams twice which was kinda strange," Crowson explains. "But it's a nice league and I feel like it's gonna be a fairly balanced group of team. No teams in particular. Just new places, new faces."

And while the Dragons replace a lot of talent, Monroe players and coaches are confident in what they can do in 2018.

"It's really a balanced team, we've got a lot of guys in new spots," the coach concludes. "We graduated ten seniors last year and have a lot of places so I think both sides need help."

And with so little time until the first kick of the year, the title defense has already begun.
