MAUPIN, Ore. – The largest wildfire burning in Oregon has grown to nearly 100,000 acres.

At 99,170 acres, the Boxcar Fire has scorched an area twice the size of Washington, D.C. in Central Oregon near the town of Maupin.

Air tankers and helicopters have been dropping water and fire retardant on hot spots to help secure the fire lines.

The fire, which is 47 percent contained, merged with the South Junction Fire over the weekend. It was sparked by lightning on Thursday.

Crews are hoping to have it fully contained by July 6.
