LEABURG, Ore. – A driver veered off the road into an embankment Monday night off Dear Horn Road, landing feet from the McKenzie River and prompting a huge rescue response.

McKenzie Fire & Rescue were dispatched to the area just after 9:30 p.m. after witnesses called 911 saying a car had possibly driven into the McKenzie River.

Fire and rescue crews were able to reach the mangled car to get the driver to safety. They wrapped up the rescue just before 11 p.m.

Rescue officials said the driver was the only person in the car and was taken to RiverBend Hospital in Springfield.

The car’s airbags were deployed and rescue officials said the driver had non-life-threatening injuries. He was transported to the hospital as a precaution.

The Lane County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
