SALEM, Ore. (AP) - Some residents of an Oregon county are asking voters to sign a petition that would put a measure on the ballot barring local officials from enforcing any gun control law.

The proposed Second Amendment Preservation Ordinance was filed with the Deschutes County clerk last week. The county in central Oregon tends to be conservative, with most rural voters voting for Donald Trump. But Democrat Hillary Clinton was favored in the county seat of Bend.

Gun control advocates, meanwhile, are collecting signatures to qualify a measure for the statewide ballot that would restrict assault weapons and large-capacity ammunition magazines.

Deschutes County Sheriff Shane Nelson says he opposes that initiative. He said on Facebook this month that he believes every law-abiding citizen who wants to own a firearm should do so.
