EUGENE, Ore. -- Facing a shortage of skilled carpenters and other tradesmen, one prominent local construction company is taking action.

Eugene-based Chambers Construction is looking for students for their apprenticeship program.

They take in 10 students, as young as 16. The three-year program consists of classroom training and hands-on experience. Students get instruction on 36 different phases of construction.

“It feels pretty good,” apprentice Jacob Wilson said. “A lot of the days, I’ll look and stuff, and I was like, ‘I built that, or I helped pour that.’ It’s a nice feeling.”

Once training is complete, apprentices graduate to journeyman carpenter. Starting pay is almost $24 an hour.

“It is very supporting,” apprentice James Cowles said. “We look up to them, and they’re training us, teaching us everything that they know so we can someday be like them and rise to the top of the company potentially.”
