ROSEBURG, Ore. – The Douglas County District Attorney has dropped criminal charges against a Roseburg mother whose child died in a hot car this summer.

Nicole Engler was facing manslaughter charges after police said she left her 21-month-old daughter, Remington Engler, in her car seat while she was at work in June.

Prosecutors said they reviewed evidence, including text messages between Engler and her husband, and determined that Engler believed she had dropped her daughter off at Cobb Street School day care when she went to work at Evergreen Family Medicine.

When Engler returned to her vehicle after 4 p.m., she discovered her daughter in the backseat unconscious and blue. Engler rushed her daughter into the medical facility, where staff members tried to revive her, but were unsuccessful.

The child was taken to Mercy Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
