EUGENE, Ore. -- The community came together to celebrate their love for the Willamette River at Eugene's River Festival.

The City of Eugene's Recreation Program hosted the festival at Alton Baker Park.

Families enjoyed free activities on the river including canoeing, paddle boarding, kayaking and more.

The festival honored the indigenous people who are said to have first called the river their home.

Tom Powers, a program supervisor with the City of Eugene Recreation said the Willamette River is the foundation of Eugene and should be appreciated.

"We have this huge history and we need to take care of our river and then we need to take steps as a community towards getting people to the river," Powers said.

The event started at noon and wrapped up at 5 p.m.

Last year's River Fest brought in 250 people and organizers said this year, they expect that number to double.
