MYRTLE CREEK, Ore. -- The Myrtle Creek community is coming together to support the family of the man killed in last week's historic storm.

Marshall Hitt died outside of his home in south Myrtle Creek when a tree fell on him. He was the husband of Douglas County Clerk Patricia Hitt.

Shelly Prater, a close friend of Patricia's, said Marshall was using a chainsaw to clear fallen trees from his property on Feb. 25 when it happened: "It uprooted and hit him from behind...he never heard it coming."

She said the Hitt's home had lost power when the storm hit. Patricia and other family members left for a hotel Sunday night, and Marshall had stayed behind to clear fallen trees before joining them. Prater said he was found the next morning by his nephew and niece.

Prater said they're coping the best they can, but it's all still a huge shock.

"There's been an outpouring of calls and cards. People stopping by," said Prater. "Even the funeral home just showing their love and support for Marshall and Patty."

She said Seven Feathers Casino Resort in Canyonville has been very supportive as well, giving them and family members a place to stay.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help pay for funeral expenses. If you'd like to help, click here.
