SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- Around 50 people gathered Monday at the intersection of Interstate 105 and 52nd Street to honor Officer Chris Kilcullen, who was killed in the line of duty back in 2011.

Those in attendance described Kilcullen as a funny, hard-working man who was loved by many.

People lined up on the highway to pay their respects Monday morning as the Eugene Police Benevolent Association Board put a wreath on a tree that was planted in his honor in Springfield where he died.

He was just 43 years old when he was shot and killed during a traffic stop.

Kilcullen's father, John, who also served as an officer, spoke about his character and how much he finds himself missing him everyday.

"I knew he was a good guy and as you might expect I miss him everyday. (I) think about him all the time, but to have this many people -- his friends, coworkers, people who didn't even know him -- come just for a moment to honor his memory and his legacy makes my heart swell with pride, " Kilcullen said.

Kilcullen was a 12-year veteran of the Eugene Police Department who earned more than 85 commendations for his positive presence in the community.

He left behind a wife and two children.

Police said he is known for saving many lives both on and off the road throughout his entire career and that he's deeply missed by many.
