COOS BAY, Ore. – Coos Bay Police arrested a man on arson and other charges after a fire was discovered Tuesday.
Shad Scott Ebinger, 49, was arrested and taken into custody on charges of second-degree arson, first-degree criminal mischief, reckless endangering and mail theft.
The fire was reported Tuesday just before 8 p.m. on the east side of a building at 1165 Newmark Avenue, at the southeast end of the Y Plaza. That part of the building is occupied by the O.C. Cab Company.
The man who reported the fire also provided police with a description of the suspect. The description matched a man police had contacted in the same area earlier on a complaint about someone who was intoxicated and confrontational.
Two O.C. Cab Company employees were inside the building at the time of the fire but were not injured. The interior of the building filled with smoke, but damage was minimized as a result of the actions of a cab employee who used a fire extinguisher to slow the spread of the fire until the Coos Bay Fire Department arrived.
Ebinger was found at about 8 p.m. and taken into custody after police completed an investigation. He was taken to Coos County Jail.
