COOS BAY, Ore. – The Coos Bay Fire Department is spreading fire prevention awareness this week by visiting local schools and hosting an open house.

The department is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association to promote this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!”

The open house event will be held on Oct. 9 from 5 p.m. to 7p.m. at Fire Station 1, 450 Elrod Ave.

Through the campaign they want to save lives and prevent tragedies. According to fire rescuers too many people are still getting injured or killed in home fires.

Statistics show that in 2017 fire departments responded to 357,000 house fires nationwide. These fires caused 2,630 deaths and 10,600 fire injuries. On average seven people died because of a house fire per day from 2012 to 2016.

In support of Fire Prevention Week, Governor Kate Brown proclaimed October as Fire Prevention Awareness month in Oregon.
