Coos Bay man charged with arson in two house fires

Police said the two houses were hit with explosive devices.

NORTH BEND, Ore. – A Coos Bay resident has been charged with two counts of arson following fires at houses in North Bend and Coos Bay on Wednesday.

Chad Bunnell, 30, is also charged with one count of attempted arson and three counts of unlawful manufacture of a destructive device.

Firefighters responded to the first fire Wednesday morning at 10:33 a.m., after receiving reports of a possible explosion at a house on Brussells Street in North Bend.

Police and firefighters discovered a broken window and a small fire at the residence. Further investigation determined that the house on Brussells Street was struck with a manufactured explosive device.

At 11:05 a.m. on Wednesday, Coos Bay police and fire departments responded to a house fire on 17th Avenue in Coos Bay. A resident of that house was injured in the fire and taken to Bay Area Hospital. Investigators said the cause of that fire was also a manufactured explosive device.

An investigation led officers to identify and arrest Bunnell, and charge him with two counts of arson, one count of attempted arson and unlawful manufacture of a destructive device. He was arrested and taken to Coos County Jail.

The investigation was conducted by the following agencies: Oregon State Police, Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Coos Bay Police and Fire Departments, North Bend Police and Fire Departments, State Fire Marshall’s Office, Southwestern Oregon Fire Investigation Team, and the Coos County District Attorney’s Office.
