Coos County investigates string of arsons

Since May 21, there have been a number of arsons at residences in the Cape Arago area.

CAPE ARAGO, Ore. – The Coos County Sheriff’s Office is investigating four suspected arsons in the Cape Arago area.

The latest incident happened Sunday at 2:30 a.m. in the 91,000 block of Cape Arago Highway. Responding deputies discovered that an unknown man had poured gasoline on the door of a residence and set it on fire before leaving the area. Cameras caught both still and video images of the suspect.

The homeowners saw a tall man leaving the area. They said the man walked away at a slow pace even when they attempted to confront him. This was the fourth such incident in the area.

The first incident involved a man pouring gasoline in front of the entrance to Seaport RV park and setting the gasoline on fire.

The second incident happened May 21 at 2:30 a.m. at 91222 Cape Arago Highway. Cameras caught a video of a man carrying a gas can.

The third suspected arson was June 5 at 11:30 p.m. at 92222 Cape Arago Highway. Cameras were installed at the residence but did not capture the suspect in video or photographs.

In all instances, emergency personnel arrived on the scene within minutes and were not able to find the suspect. The incidents have typically occurred on Friday or Saturday, with one fire started each week, early in the morning.

The public is asked to report any suspicious activity or any relevant information to the Coos County Sheriff’s Office at 541-396-2106.
