CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Corvallis High School has new turf for their football field this upcoming season.

The Corvallis School District spent $450,000 to replace the old turf.

Bond Program Director David Fishel believes that the previous turf field had its fair share of use and was at the point where they started to become concerned about players’ safety.

The new type of artificial turf uses “crumb rubber,” which is made from ground-up vehicle tires.

Some people believe this turf is harmful to both human health and the environment.

Fishel said this kind of turf is no different from what is normally used and this material is on most synthetic fields.

The Environmental Protection Agency is taking a closer look at the material, and Fishel said the district will use the EPA’s results to take any suggested precautions.
