COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. – Dozens of community members gathered at a Memorial Day ceremony to honor fallen veterans from the area.
The ceremony was presented by the American Legion Post 32 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3473.
The ceremony was held at the armory in Cottage Grove. During the ceremony, officials read the names of 36 veterans who recently passed away.
"The older I get the more those aren't just names that are read of community members,” said Jeff Gowing, the mayor of Cottage Grove. “They start becoming friends of mine that passed away, so it's very moving to be here.”
Additionally, three people were also inducted into the Wall of Honor in the American Legion Post 32 building, that honors the 12 people from the Cottage Grove area who died while fighting in the Vietnam War.
After the ceremony, community members marched to the Centennial Bridge where there was a 21 gun salute and they dropped a wreath in the river.
Many veterans at the ceremony said it is important to remember those who sacrificed everything, not only on Memorial Day but every day.
