SPRINGFIELD, Ore. --- Police tell KEZI 9 News that a crash on I-5 on Friday started as a Springfield carjacking.

The incident happened in the Gateway Shopping Center parking lot on Friday afternoon.

Dyan McKelvy, the victim, was sitting in her car, waiting for her daughter to finish shopping, when a random woman got into her vehicle.

Police say when she turned to her left a man with a knife was standing right outside her window, which was rolled down.

McKelvy's daughter, Mckenna Hepperle, came out as the incident was ending.

"Some guy came to the window that she had just rolled down with a knife to her face and said, 'Scoot over, we're taking your car,'" said Hepperle.

Police said the man and woman got into McKelvy's car and the man held a knife to her throat.

"So she's begging and pleading, and the woman says fine let her out, so they let her out and she's snapping pictures as the zoom away," said Hepperle.

By the time police got to the scene, the suspects were gone.

"You'd think somebody would've thought, oh that car, there's screaming, there's honking maybe, but no, people were walking by and nobody even stopped to help until after the fact," said Hepperle.

Springfield Police took a report of the incident and sent out information to multiple agencies to be on the lookout for the stolen car.

Within two hours of Springfield Police sending out the information, Oregon State Police said they got a report of a reckless driver in a car matching the stolen one.

Police said the car was driving Southbound on I-5.

Police tell KEZI 9 News that they found the car crashed in a ditch by Milepost 156 and that the two suspects were ejected from it.

We're told both suspects are in the hospital and their conditions are unknown.
