CRESWELL, Ore. -- Some Creswell residents demonstrated in a "prohibited activity" parade on Saturday.

They demonstrated because two people are facing fines of over $2,500 for holding a parade on the Fourth of July without a permit.

The Lane County Sheriff's Office said the citations have nothing to do with the message of the participants, and were issued out of a concern for public safety.

The flyer for the event said, "If you have to ask permission, are you really free?"

The staging procession began at 11 a.m. and the parade started at noon.
