ELMIRA, Ore. – Several fire crews helped battle a house fire for fire training.

“We’re the ones setting the fire on this house all in the name of training,” Lt. Tressa Miller with Lane Fire Authority.

She said the training firefighters get from this type of structure is invaluable to them.

“It allow us to get our new folks in to experience what real fire is like,” she said.

She said the training exposes members to a real fire without anyone really experiencing an injury or loss.

Lane Fire Authority, Santa Clara, and Junction City were among the participating crews.

Miller said Sunday's training helps firefighters better understand fire behavior and attack styles while also learn ventilation techniques. She said officers also learn to lead the crews when responding to a fire.

“Everyone is working on something different,” Miller said. “Everyone is working at their own level, on their own skill set, and helping them to become better firefighters and community members.”

Miller said the firefighters on training range in ages between 16 and 56 years old.

Taylor Hensley is 17 years old and is one of the many firefighters who participated in the training.

“They teach you a lot, not just fire skills, but things that apply all around life,“ Hensley said.

Hensley has been training for more than a year now and hopes to join one of the volunteer teams once she completes training.

“It’s not always the thank yous or anything else like that, “ Hensley said. “It’s just knowing you’re helping somebody.

Miller said the home used for the training was donated by people in the community. She also wanted to reassure the community that the home was burned intentioanlly and to not be alarmed if they see it smoldering for a couple of days.
