EUGENE, Ore. – A 13-year-old boy on a bicycle was injured after being hit and trapped under a car Friday afternoon.

This happened around 3:30 in the Dutch Bros parking lot, 1675 Coburg Road.

Officers say the boy was turning into the parking lot when the Toyota FJ Cruiser struck him. Crews found him pinned underneath the vehicle and worked to safely extricate him.

The boy's injuries are considered not life threatening, officials said, and medics took him to a hospital. No names have been released at this time due to the age of the patient.

"You have to be paying attention to bicyclists," Officer Sean Dillon said. "They're not always following the rules, even though they're supposed to. A car versus a bike, a bike's never going to win. So it's just important for everybody, bicyclists and cars, to pay attention."

Traffic was significantly affected during the incident as it coincided with students leaving school. The scene was mostly cleared just after 4 p.m.

The driver of the SUV did not seem impaired, and the case is still under investigation.
