WASHINGTON, D.C. -- U.S. Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.) accused the White House of an "assault" on children and families, saying this weekend's planned immigration raids were "cruel."
“The Trump administration’s plans to execute massive raids across the country are nothing more than an assault on vulnerable immigrant children and families, many whose only crime is being here in this country without proper documentation," DeFazio said in a statement. "These cruel tactics will likely destroy families, ruin lives, and tear apart communities."
DeFazio said he supported the detention of those who "pose a threat to our communities, such as violent criminals, drug traffickers, and others." And he conceded that the U.S. needs "thoughtful, meaningful, and comprehensive immigration reform."
