EUGENE, Ore. -- The University of Oregon Board of Trustees will vote Wednesday on a resolution to rename the campus’s first building, Deady Hall.
If the board votes to rename the building, it would have the temporary name University Hall. UO President Michael Schill would also have to recommend a new, permanent name by the end of this next school year.
In a letter to the campus, Schill said Matthew Deady -- who the hall was named after -- held racist views and was pro-slavery. Students first raised concerns about the name back in 2016 but Schill ultimately recommended against changing it.
If a new name is approved, the school must also establish an installation to educate people about who Matthew Deady was and his complicated legacy.
In order for public comments to be reviewed by the board, they must be submitted by 8 a.m. Wedneday June 24 to email@example.com.
