SALEM, Ore. – Deputies have seized a gun from a 10-year-old student at an elementary school in Salem.
The Marion County Sheriff’s Office was called to Four Corners Elementary School around 1 p.m. Wednesday after the unloaded handgun was found in the student’s backpack.
Deputies said students saw the weapon and alerted staff.
“Today’s events reflect our daily efforts in our school to empower our students that when they see something to say something,” said deputy Chris Bangs, a school resource officer. “The students and staff efforts today stopped an incident that could have had grave consequences.”
Deputies are working with the school and the student’s parents and will turn over the results of the investigation to the Marion Juvenile Department.
