JASPER, Ore. -- A Lane County deputy jumped into the Willamette River to help save a woman from drowning on Saturday.

The sheriff’s office said Deputy Codey Crawford was helping with a traffic stop at about 4 p.m. when they received a report of a woman whose inner tube overturned between Jasper and Clearwater. She was able to cling to a downed tree in the river.

Crawford was first to the scene and saw that the woman was having trouble keeping her head above water in the fast current. The rescue boat was still minutes from arriving.

So Crawford grabbed a life jacket and a bag of safety rope and jumped in.

As he swam toward her, she lost her hold of the log and was swept underwater. She resurfaced and made her way to the far side of the river. Crawford stayed with her until a Eugene Springfield Fire Water Rescue boat arrived.

Pleasant Hill Fire and Rescue and Lowell Rural Fire Protection District also responded.
