SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – A couple is in the hospital recovering from injuries after their dog attacked them Wednesday morning at Jenna Village in Springfield.

KEZI 9 News spoke with several nearby residents who helped in the rescue efforts. They said they were shaken up by the incident.

"Hearing the screams and not being able to get to her because we don't have access to our backyards," Michael Bolen said. "They're fully fenced in, so it required climbing over fences to even get to them."

Multiple neighbors said the woman suffered most of the damage. On several accounts, the woman's leg was practically bitten off below the calf in the attack. They also said the damage to the man was primarily on his arm.

Officers arrived to the scene at about 7 a.m. and learned that during the attack, a neighbor shot the dog with a small caliber gun in an effort to save the couple. The dog went back into the apartment, and the neighbor shut it inside.

The victims were still in the backyard when help arrived, and officials had to remove fence boards from a neighboring apartment’s yard to get to them. Both had extensive injuries and were taken to a hospital.

Police say the couple agreed to putting the dog down due to the severity of the incident. Animal control removed the injured dog and took it to the Emergency Veterinary Hospital, where it was euthanized.

The investigation is ongoing.
