ROSEBURG, Ore - Lejay Cole, 19, of Sutherlin is charged with first degree manslaughter, in the death of Nathaniel Cagle, 21. The charge was updated Tuesday, after Cagle passed away from injuries he sustained in a car accident overnight Saturday November 18th.
According to Douglas County investigators, Cole was driving on Old Melrose Road when he crashed his car. Investigators say Cagle was the passenger. The accident happened on Old Melrose Rd. between West Goedeck Avenue and Long Meadows Lane. Douglas
County Emergency Communications received a 911 call at 3:18 a.m. Saturday.
According to court documents, Cagle was unresponsive when deputies arrived. One deputy on scene reported smelling alcohol on Cole's breath. Cole, documents show, admitted to drinking 7 beers over 4 hours, before getting behind the wheel. About an hour after the accident, Cole's blood alcohol level was .10%, according to court documents.
Cole told investigators on scene he fell asleep behind the wheel. He also said, "I shouldn't have done this and I knew it," court documents show. One deputy on scene reported Cole telling them to take him to jail.
