ROSEBURG, Ore. -- The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has assigned a deputy to crack down on illegal dumping in the area.
Deputy Noel Garcia has been working for the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office for the last 21 years. Four weeks ago, he was assigned to be a special services deputy for the solid waste department.

Officials from Douglas County Public Works said County Commissioner Chris Boice came up with the idea. They said he wanted to focus on solid waste enforcement after they saw a rise in illegal dumping cases in Douglas County.
Deputy Garcia said his job is to investigate illegal dumping cases on all county-owned properties.
“There’s definitely been an increase in the amount of phone calls we’ve been getting,” he said. “People are starting to report these things, but that’s what we want.”
The sheriff's office said citations will be handed out based on the materials they find and the location of the trash.
