COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. – A 100-year old tree on a historic property gave way and fell Saturday due to mounting snow and ice.

Andrew Jensen, a resident in Cottage Grove, said the property has an old church, school, and cemetery on it. He said he knew the snow would eventually become an issue and said it was a disappointing loss.

“I knew the tree needed to be dealt with," Jensen said. “It was one of the broadest leaf maples around.”

“It was just a whole lot of noise, it actually shook the ground. There’s a lot of weight in those old maples,” he continued.

The tree fell on a shed that used to serve as a playhouse for the school that is on the property.

He said he plans to use the fallen tree to make firewood.
