EUGENE, Ore. -- Dozens of people stopped by Shopko's parking lot Sunday with open hearts ready to give this holiday season. They dropped off their donations for Toys for Tots, a program run by the Marine Corps. The progam has been in existence for more than one hundred years.

Coordinators said the goal is to give out the toys collected to kids whose families cannot afford them for Christmas.

“The whole reason why we started the program is so that the kids can get a toy. It may not mean a lot to some people because it is only a toy, but when you think back in your childhood a toy meant a lot," said Lt. Opetaia Sitafine.

Donors are asked to deliver new toys instead of gently used ones. Lt. Sitafine said they do this because they want every child to have the experience of owning a new toy.

Eugene Police and several fire departments also partnered with the Marine Corps. Those who made a donation had a chance to ride the fire trucks or a patrol car.
