EUGENE, Ore. -- Commissioners with the Eugene Water & Electricity Board voted to move forward with installing smart meters.
Dozens of people showed up at EWEB headquarters Tuesday night and most of them opposed the new technology.
The new smart meters use radio frequencies to automatically report a customer's power and water usage, instead of having a meter reader come out to your home.
Some people complained that it could lead to job reductions but EWEB commissioner John Simpson suggested that is unavoidable.
"I don't believe EWEB is in the business of making jobs. We're in the business of delivering water and electricity. Pure water, and reliable electricity. And if we can do that with fewer people, we all win," said Simpson.
Officials said customers will be notified when a smart meter is going to be installed and then give them the option to opt out.
