EUGENE, Ore. -- The Eugene Water & Electric Board is opening its first emergency water station this weekend. It's one of five they plan to open in the next five years.

Spokesperson Joe Harwood said this is a key component of EWEB's ongoing initiative to prepare for emergencies, whether it's an earthquake, toxic algae bloom or another disaster.

The stations will provide a reliable supply of water in order to maintain public health and safety in an emergency.

Harwood said the water will come from existing, refurbished or new wells with pumps powered by backup generators or through a microgrid system that can run off of solar-charged batteries.

He said the Bethel Farm emergency water station will use an existing well and will be supplemented with a back-up generator that will power the pump, in case of an electricity outage.

EWEB and the Bethel School District will host a grand opening ceremony this Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Bethel Farm.

The "FILL UP at the Farm" event will include free 3-gallon emergency water storage containers while supplies last.
