HARRISBURG, Ore. -- A Harrisburg Elementary School student died over the weekend, and a crisis intervention team is on scene at two schools in the district, Superintendent Bryan Starr said.
"The students that were closest to him are struggling the most probably right now," Starr said. "But everybody we hope will take care of themselves."
Starr said the boy was 10 years old. However, a GoFundMe page for the family says he was 11.
Details surrounding the student’s death are unclear at this time.
According to the Linn County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a gunshot in Harrisburg Saturday after 3:30 p.m.
The investigation is ongoing, the sheriff’s office said.
"He had his whole life ahead of him. I just can't imagine how the family must feel," Harrisburg resident Dorie Deskins said.
Starr said the team on location at the elementary and middle schools is made up of counselors from Linn County and Lane County and will help students and staff cope with the loss.
